We've made our way up to Cessnock to begin our jobs as grape pickers for the Hunter Valley wine area. However, we haven't actually started working yet because there has been so much rain and the sugar levels are too low apparently. We are staying in a caravan park with lots of other backpackers, mostly from Germany but theres a handful of Canadians too. We're sharing a site with a couple Canadians named Dean and Rachelle from Edmonton. They're pretty cool, the same age as us and share our humour which is huge. Since theres been so much rain and we aren't working we've been getting a little stir crazy trying to find things to do. The one night we rented 5 movies, amazing classics in our opinion: Year One, Junior, Houseguest (yes, starring Sinbad lol), Strangers and Love and Other Drugs. We've only watched Junior so far but we're excited for the rest! Other days to get a break from hiding from the rain in the van I went for runs or we drove into town to check out the shops. With all the rain our campsite turned into a mud pit so it was just a mess to be in every day and you could never really get clean.
This weekend we're in Newcastle with Dean and Rachelle since we found out we aren't working until Monday. We drove here Friday morning after being up at 6am expecting to work and finding out we weren't. We hit the beach all day yesterday and definitely paid for it in sunburns despite wearing sunscreen. We went out for a surf which was a lot of fun and I managed to get a couple pics of Stew standing on his board which will be soon to come! Last night we stayed in a cute little hostel and went out to a couple bars. We started at the King Street hotel bar which was ok and then headed to Finnigans a pub/dance bar which was sooooo much fun. Stew and I danced upstairs and out of no where a big circle formed and guys started break dancing. I've been watching break dance videos with Stew and talking about his breakdancing days so I forced him to join in and it was sweet! It was so cool to watch, I had a blast.
Today we went out for breakfast and then to the beach again. I went for a nice 8km run later along the coast and discovered a couple cool beaches. I saw 4 different weddings taking place today which definitely goes along with everyone getting engaged these days. One of the weddings was on the beach right behind us so we may just be in some of their pictures. We had dinner by the beach watching the surfers and then made our way to Gloria Jeans so we could use some internet and charge our electronics. Tonight we'll be doing our routine of finding a parking lot to park in and sleep in. Tomorrow we'll be heading back to Cessnock to start work on Monday which I desperately need as I payed some of my visa and the funds are dwindling :S donations will be acccepted.
Running has been great and I've managed to get a pretty good schedule going. I mainly love going for runs here because we're always in new areas so I get to discover new places. I'm trying to convince Stew to do a relay triathlon with me at some point this year. I was thinking if Mick cycled, Stew swam and I ran we'd be a pretty good team. There's a relay triathlon in June in the Gold Coast so that may be an idea--only 5 months to convince him to do it. Also still planning to work towards another half marathon in May in either Melbourne or Canberra which would be great in either city.
Not too much to update as we've just been waiting to start work since the Great Ocean Road, which was awesome. We're hoping to make some good money out of this job and then head straight to Byron Bay. Stew was saying he wants to work at Dominos which would be perfect since he LOVES pizza more than life. I want to work at Subway because then I can eat it for free and get my fix all the time. Never thought we'd be looking forward to working in fast food joints for cash ha.
I spent Sept 2011-June 2012 Traveling to Australia covering the entire east coast down to the great ocean road and back up with my best friend Stewy. We then journeyed on to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam for an incredible South east Asia experience. I went on to Bali and ended my trip in the beautiful islands of Fiji before returning to Canada. I now live in Toronto Ontario but the journey hasn't ended...

Touring the Great Ocean Road
I am currently sitting in a restaurant called Cuda Bar in a small town called Lorne along the great ocean road. For $2/wing Stew was able to get some chicken wings, and by some i mean 4...lets not over do it Australia. MAN are they gonna die when we open our own chicken wing place here. I got a salad and a duck spring roll which was pretty good. We drove here today from Geelong where we slept last night in a parking lot behind the local movie theatre. We saw the movie Hugo as well as New Year's Eve which we snuck into after Hugo. I love NYE as obviously it was full of my favourite celebrities and I hadn't seen a movie in the theatre in Australia yet. The parking lot proved to be a good location because the parking lot was in behind the theatre, free from busy traffic or mall security. Our other option was going to be to take part in a "lock in" at an internet and gaming cafe where a tonne of people (computer geeks, yes im gonn say it) pay $18 to be locked in for 12 hours straight to play games like world of warcraft and call of duty. being as stew and i dont play those we'd have been using it to stream tv shows all night/a warm place ot stay for the night for cheaper than a hostel. We didn't end up going for it but when we arrived this morning to use the internet for an hour the smell of sweaty nerds was ripe hahaha. In hindsight, it would have been legendary to see the crowd in there....
We spent a night in Melbourne a couple nights ago. We headed towards Melbourne from Canberra, sadly having to say a temporary goodbye to our new friends Charmaine and Owen. We headed towards Melbourne and stopped at a free campsite in Wagga Wagga which consisted of an open field and other campers, trailers, etc. set up. There were a million cockatoo's sqawking their heads off so I woke up pretty early wishing I had a bee bee gun to shut them up. ha. From wagga wagga we drove and stopped in Albury, a cute little town that we ate lunch in and then continued on to Melbourne. We had a small dinner in a pub-like restaurant for happy hour and then continued to our hostel. Since every hostel was full we ended up in Elizabeth Street hostel which was right by the Victoria markets and owned by some asians. The best part was that the front desk was located in a variety store, also owned by the same asians haha. It was a cheap hostel though and we ended up making friends with a Taiwanese guy named Dandy who was quite the character. He had a black eye when Stew met him and his story about how it happened changed with a bit more detail every time we got more information out of him. We had some drinks with him and then headed down to a bar on the corner attached to a hostel called Melbourne Interantional. It was pretty cool, good old 90s music and we met some Canadian girls later in the evening. Dandy joined us as well and I think was more than happy to see Stew as he showed up ALSO wearing a plaid shirt like the one stew chose for the night and couldn't stop following him haha. I was lucky to get my travel buddy back to leave the place!
In the morning we had breakfast at a place called Jasper Kitchen and then we made the drive towards Geelong. Being hungover we didn't do too much in Geelong besides the movies and eating at Nando's for some chicken wraps. We got up this morning and did our usual routine of using a McDonalds bathroom to wash up, brush our teetth and grab some coffee. We drove the great ocean road today and stopped in Bells Beach and Angelsea to watch the local surfers. Stew was going to go out at Bells but it was all realllllly good locals and it was a little cool, which explained the full body wetsuits every surfer was wearing. We stayed at Angelsea for a bit, enough time to catch some sun again and read a bit of my book. We carried on to Lorne later and stopped at a little lagoon we saw from the road to go and bathe in. Equipped with bars of soap, shampoo and whats left of our dignity at this point we headed to the just-past knee deep water to wash up amongst the families with their children enjoying their day at the beach. At this point being in Australia for exactly 4 months today, its starting to not phase me at all when we bathe, brush our teeth or change in public areas. AND we wore bathing suits in the water, so it could have been worse haha.
Tonight we're staying at a free campsite up a longgggggggggggggg hill from Lorne that has toilets and an open field to park our van. Tomorrow we are plannin to get up early so that Stew can go for a surf and I can run along the coast. We'll be starting to make our trek back up towards Sydney to the Hunter Valley area for our NEW JOBS as grape pickers in wine country. We found out just before we left canberra that we got jobs in the hunter valley and will be picking grapes every day for about $19/hour. NOT bad if you ask us, especially since we've been out of work for a solid couple months now. We'll be starting that job on the 21st of January so we have about 5-6 days to get back up to that area, just depending on how many hours we drive each day we will make it there sooner or later. We will probably stop inCanberra to see Owen and Charmaine again and then continue to work. We'll be staying in a caravan park close to a winery and we'll be working at about 6am everyday until it gets too hot. Should be decent money and since we both have experience (according to the lies on our resumes) it should be a breeze ;)
Anyways, Victoria Australia has been great despite the cooler climate but we have to appreciate it for now as once we head up and in land we're going to be melting. We've been in long pants and sweatshirts almost every night since Sydney so itll be a nice change to be in shorts a lot more. The nights can be quite cool in the van these days but luckily we have blankets and hoodies to keep us warm. Seeing the ocean again has been awesome and definitely worth driving down if you ever come to Australia. We've been back to our routine again of driving aimlessly, googling spots to stop and basically parking whenever we see a cool place or beach and sleeping wherever we won't get arrested for trespassing ha. Showers come slim to none but when we do find a way to bathe its pretty amazing. Appreciating the smaller things in life has been somethin we've adjusted to quite well.
Just want to give a big shout out to all those celebrating monster jam this weekend!!! We both totally wish we could be there just for today to be celebrating in red neck attire (fubar styles) and cheering on gravedigger. Stew was able to skype with the gang this morning and we're thinking of you all and hopin its just as epic as last year and for stew the many many years before. Love and miss you all, thinking about our friends and families all along our journey :)

Canberra
Dad's last day here in Australia today :( he's flying back tomorrow morning to Calgary. I can't believe he's already going back! We've been in Canberra for a couple days now staying with Charmaine and Owen, dad's friends. They are absolutely wonderful people and have treated us like kings since we got together with them in Sydney.
We drove to Sydney from Budgewoi and met Charmaine and Owen at Darling Harbour. Their daughter lives in a gorgeous apartment/hotel building that faces the harbour bridge and Opera House. They kindly set us up on the 13th floor in a 2 bedroom apartment that was fully stacked with everything we could ever need (including bath robes) and a beautiful view. We literally felt like we won the lottery or something, it was so beautiful! We spent the first couple hours catching up with them and having drinks. Then we took the ferry across the harbour to a fine dining restaurant called Wild Fire that faced the opera house. We had a HUGE delicious meal of all kinds of meats and sides, lots of wine and yummy dessert.
Saturday morning I went for a run along the harbour before we all took the ferry across to Watson's Bay where we saw the gap--a lookout where apparently people have jumped and committed suicide, kinda creepy but a nice area. We had a great seafood lunch and then headed back to Darling. Saturday night we went to a Picasso Art exhibit and then got to check out hte first day of the Sydney festival that consisted of thousands of people, all kinds of live music and dancing. We even got to see some acrobatics.
On sunday Stew, Dad and I drove to the Blue Mountains and saw the famous 3 sisters (mountains). It was neat to see and compare to our 3 sisters in Banff. While Aussie's are much smaller it was cool to see some inland and take a detour. It was a long drive down to Canberra but we made it around dinner time at Charmaine and Owen's house. Monday I tried the running trails of Canberra and then we went to a bunch of museums. We also got to see Parliament House and get some great pictures. After eating a pizza at the museum Stew wasn't feeling well so he slept for the next 14 hours while I visited with Charmaine, Owen and Dad, and occasionally checked on my patient. Glad to report he's much better and has been assisting me in our search for farm work somewhere in Victoria, Australia. We've applied to dairy farms, fruit picking, wineries, etc. and are patiently waiting and calling places in hopes of getting a job so we can save some money.
Charmaine and Owen have offered their place for us to stay until we find something which is so nice of them and they have been nothing but incredible to us since we found them. Spoiling us rotten and feeding us the best food! We figure we should get out of their hair soon and back to our reality living in the van and eating cans of tuna haha. Fingers crossed that we find jobs soon!!

Here's to a New Year
My apologies for not having an update in so long but we've been on the road and in areas where we do not have access to the internet butttttttttt here goes...
Surfer's Paradise was a lot of fun, we got to go to Wet n Wild Waterpark which was a blast but a little overcast so a bit chilly on some of the slides. We spent 3 days there with Stew's friends Jeff and Matt and then headed to Byron Bay for Stew's birthday weekend. We met up with Mick and Andrew and a new friend Amber at a caravan park in the middle of Byron Bay. We also got to meet a wicked couple of backpackers, Amber and Dean (Dean being from Victoria, Aus). We camped in the park and had drinks the first night. Saturday afternoon we went over to the Pass which is a wicked surf spot that all the locals go to. the waves were nothing like we've ever seen, absolutely PERFECT breaks and so clean. It was tough to get out on the waves because of the number of pro surfers and locals getting territory over the area but it was really cool to watch them ride these waves for a good km or more and have to get out and walk back up the beach to catch the next one. So cool.
Saturday night in Byron we went out to the bars for Stew's birthday and definitely tied one on. We were all feeling it Sunday so we had a low key day on the beach Sunday afternoon. Sunday evening was by far the best part of my entire trip here in Australia. We went to this beach front bar/restaurant expecting to have a quiet casual meal for Stew's birthday and ended up walking into one of the biggest, coolest reggae concerts ever. Hippies and surfers and beach bums everywhere just dancing to the beat. I was in heaven. We got some beers and food and listened to the show. Amber, dean, Stew and I stayed a bit longer for the mmusic and beer and then headed back to camp. I got stew a birthday cake and candles he got to blow out before we ate the cake with our bare hands like barbarians lol. Then we headed down the beach and found a sweet huge bonfire of hippies with a drum circle, fire twirling and music pumping. It was so much fun. Monday we had to head out and made our journey towards Sydney.
We stopped in Lennoxhead, Forster, Coff's Harbour and Newcastle along the coast on our way to Sydney. We stopped in the small town of Grafton which wasn't really anything exciting sadly but we got a bumper sticker to add to our ongoing collection. We have been living in the van since we left Pumpkin Island really besides our stay in Surfers. We've nailed down the art of finding small parking lots by the beach that we can park overngiht as we just look like a commercial van anyways. It is pretty hilarious to open the van door and walk out in my boxers to families arriving at the beach, walking their dogs, etc. We parked behind a train station in the slum area of Sydney the night before we picked up dad from the airport. We parked under a tree full of bats that proceeded to shit huge turds down on our van until we moved to a different area. Hilarious though.
Got dad from the airport and have been camping in various caravan parks. Got a tent for dad and often spend downtime tailgating out the back of our van with a movie on the laptop and beers in hand. We toured Darling Harbour where the real world sydney was filmed, saw the opera house and bridge and the rocks. Really cool! Christmas eve we watched home alone and drank wine, then christmas day exchanged stockings and headed to manly beach since bondi was going to be impossible for parking. We got hammered on the beach off goon and wore our santa hats. We carried the goon in a santa sac which was hilarious for us and apparently the asian tourists who stopped us to take pictures. amazing. we stayed in a hostel and then back to the campground the next day. we've been camping since and are now in an area called budgewoi with a really nice caravan park that has community cooking areas and literally a minute to the beach. new years was low key, had drinks on the campground and saw fireworks.
we took dad out on the surfboard yesterday and though he didn't stand he was able to paddle out into the waves like a pro and got some sweet body boarding rides. i was so proud! today we went to a reptile park and saw some snakes, alligators, kangaroos, etc. which was pretty cool. In a couple days we'll be heading back to darling harbour to stay with a couple of dads friends he met in italy. we'll also be going to canberra with them before dad has to head back to canada. stew and i are planning to make it towards melbourne and maybe get some farm work done for cash before going to the great ocean road. right now our rough plans are to make our way back up to byron bay to live there for a few months as we both loved it. theres the quiksilver pro surf comp at the end of feb that we want to watch too and see kelly slater in the flesh. just rough ideas for now! pictures will be on facebook soon! merry christmas and happy new year to all!!
